Review: The Stand-In Boyfriend

The Stand-In Boyfriend The Stand-In Boyfriend by Emma Doherty
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Livy has been in love with one of her best friends, Jessie, for years, but it's getting harder to watch him choose everyone but her. She's always there for him, helps him with homework and studying and would drop everything in a moment's notice just to be around him. While she thinks she's been keeping her hard core crush under wraps, the most popular guy at school has guessed her secret. Chase is the captain of the soccer team, charismatic, charming and has a proposition for Livy that will solve both of their love life problems.
Chase wants his ex to realize he's done with their on again - off again relationship, and what better way to get Jessie's attention than to start dating the most popular guy at school (not to mention Jessie's man crush).
Although Livy doesn't originally agree with the plan, since her anxiety makes it hard for her to adjust to new situations, the plan is set in motion. Lines are blurry in this fake relationship and the benefits seem to be skewed to Livy's side. She can't help but wonder why would Chase want to help her without getting anything in return?
Their fake relationship has become a really great friendship and after months of navigating, the plan might be working. She's grown to rely on Chase, who helps her get past some of her social anxiety and makes her feel more confident. But if she finally gets Jessie like she's always wanted, what will happen to her new friendship with Chase?

This was a super cute high school rom - com that was fun to read. Livy felt more real to me because I understood her anxiety induced choices. While it hindered her in many ways, it was fun seeing her open up to Chase and watch them connect. Chase was so patient and adorable in his ways to make Livy feel comfortable.
