Up until this point, you don't know much about Ashley. She seems to be the quieter one in the group that only focuses on the piano. And while it's true that piano is Ashley's only focus, you don't understand the reason until now.
She has a past that deeply affected who she has become. She may not be interested in hooking up with men like Sam or getting into a full relationship like Chloe or Isabella but if they knew the past sadness she constantly has to bare, they would understand. But other than her parents, no one knows her whole story.
He was a part of her past that she's kept buried for the last 5 years. Sure she may think about him all the time, but at least she's pursuing piano and getting her masters and winning competitions while in great program. Until the one name called up to the school's department audition, is the one she wasn't expecting to hear again. Now he's on her turf but he's taking over. He's at her coffee shop and he's now taking her first place spot. Wasn't it enough that her first love completely crushed her teenage heart? But it's not that he's just around, he wants to talk about their past. Opening old wounds is easier said then done.
While part of her considers this might be the closure she's been missing, another part of her has always wondered why? What possible excuse could justify his actions? How could he abandon her after the promise he made?

But when she decides to open up her heart to allow forgiveness, old feelings emerge and the two can't help but fall into an old pattern. Ashley's in over her head trying to navigate the past and understand the old feelings re-emerging.
