Review: The Boy I Hate

The Boy I Hate The Boy I Hate by Taylor Sullivan
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Samantha and Renee have been best friends for a long time, sharing everything, including hating Renee's older brother Tristan. (AKA The star athlete with a cocky attitude and the ability to charm girls out of their panties) He was irresistible, except to Samantha, which really bonded the two friends. Until one summer night may have changed Sam's perspective when Tristan showed her a different side of himself. She couldn't help but be charmed... until the next day comes and he acts like nothing happened.

It's been years since she's had to deal with Tristan, but with Renee getting married across the country, the pair find themselves on a shared road trip after her high school sweetheart bails last minute.

While the plan is to avoid each other as much as possible, the two eventually have to face the one secret Sam has kept from Renee, Tristan was her first kiss. He was always reckless and had the personality that attracted people to him. But this road trip is showing her that maybe that one night years ago, he was real and showed a side of him not many get to see. She just graduated college and is trying to make a life as an artist which isn't turning out as she planned. Years ago she chose to be with Steven as a safe and predictable option, but with Tristan is around, she's starting to realize that the "safe" option isn't always the right one. But in making this new choice, she could be risking her relationship with her best friend along with the future she had planned.

Some of my favorite lines...
"Yes, you can’t help the people you fall in love with, but you also can’t help the people who fall in love with you."

"I normally don’t ask, I normally don’t have to, but I’m trying damned hard to keep my promise. I want to kiss you, Samantha.” His mouth moved slowly toward hers. “Now’s your chance to tell me you don’t want me to."
