"Truth knows how to say I dare you and make you take notice, even if you’d rather disown it and remain insulated and safe."
Boyce seems to be the guy not afraid to take risks, and he isn't, except when it comes to Pearl. Although it may shock many, their friendship started as kids and although never pursued in public, neither can shake their old time crushes. If only one of them was brave enough to admit the superficial banter runs a lot deeper and is more truth than joke.
Pearl had always planned on becoming a doctor, but when it came time to accept a doctorate program, she followed her heart and chose a different path, estranging her from her now ex boyfriend and family. With nowhere to turn to, Pearl turns to her best friend, Boyce.
But living together, even temporarily, is sparking up an old flame.

“I’m gonna kiss you. Unless you tell me not to good and loud right now, I’m gonna kiss you, and I’m not gonna be sorry.”
"For my heart, he was a grounding wire, the needle of a compass, a gravitational pull."
"My heart—carefully concealed and never worn on my sleeve or any other visible place—turned a blind eye and a deaf ear to reason. It craved what it wanted, and for years, it wanted one thing against all better judgment: Boyce Wynn."
"The heart wants what the heart wants. Great. Now what?"
“She’s not my girlfriend.”... “What’re ya—blind?” ...“I was.”
"I knew neither of them was ever coming back. No one came back. Not for me."
"'I earned my due, putting up with that man for sixteen years—'...'Brent put up with his shit for longer. So did I. My brother’s due—your son’s due—was a hole in the ground after years of looking after a child he got saddled with raising while he was raising himself.'”
But leaving those words unsaid—I wanted to be your only—was also the cowardly thing. My one moment of regret in my twenty-one years.
I’ll wait. Nine months is nothing when I plan to hold on to you for the rest of my life.”
“Sweetheart, if and when I leave you, it won’t be by my choice. I’ll love you straight on through eternity.” He blinked groggily but, true to form, kept talking. “Would this be a good time to tell you I wanna marry you someday? I wanna give you babies and a home and lay you down and love you every night. If I live and that bullet didn’t pierce anything essential to doing those things, that is.”
“This body,” he whispered, trailing our joined hands down the center of my chest. “Will it surrender under my hands? If I swear to worship you from the top of your head to your toes and everyfuckingthing between?” At my nod, he left my hand low on my belly, his palm roaming back to cover my heart. “And this heart, above all else. Does this heart belong to me?”...“All yours,” I said. “Always yours.”
"'Pearl Torres Frank, I want to have you and hold you and love you for as long as we both shall live. Will you let me do that, sweetheart?' She nodded and burst into tears." (hide spoiler)]
